Mission Statement

Dr. Tebbetts has devoted his career in plastic surgery to redefining the patient experience in breast augmentation. Having been in practice for a while and seeing all the unnecessary pain and suffering, if you will, of cosmetic breast augmentation patients and seeing the rise in national reoperation rates - he began a mission to change this operation for women.

It began with implant design - how can we make the product that is placed into a woman's body better and make it last longer? Then came an evolution in education and surgical techniques. What good is a new product without new and better ways of using them? As a result of these improved processes, we began to see our patients experience change - they were very pleased with their results and the need for revision was decreasing for any reason and their recoveries were amazing - up and out shopping - taking care of their kids the afternoon of surgery - returning to normal, routine activities in just 24 Hours!

As this new level of experience became routine, not just a here or there type occurrence, we knew we had to share this information with patients and surgeons. Dr. Tebbetts has published more scientific, professional articles and books on primary breast augmentation issues than any other member of our specialty. He has explored this operation from every angle and has sought to share his experience and knowledge with his colleagues worldwide. When patients recovery easier and have a better experience and long lasting result - we all do better!

As for patient education, our first little 24 page handout was just not enough to cover the wealth of information we needed to share with patients - thus came the first, truly comprehensive educational tool for women, The Best Breast book. Published 10 years and 490 pages ago, it made an overwhelming difference in how potential patients went about researching breast augmentation and breast implants. Knowledge is power and that is what The Best Breast book gives patients - the power to educated themselves, and with their plastic surgeons, make responsible decisions to improve results and limit reoperations. Thankfully, we continue to see improvements in this arena, so the need to update women on current surgical advancements and new implant options and choices and better reasons to seek a 24 Hour Recovery emerged and so did The Best Breast 2.

Use our book to educate yourself - use it as a tool to interview surgeons - use it as a tool for better outcomes and recovery. We know our efforts have improved the experiences of our patients - with 97% of them out to dinner the night of surgery and resuming normal activities, the lowest capsular contracture rate we have ever seen 1.5% and the lowest ever published reoperation rate 3%.

Reconciling Desires With Reality:

What Do I Want and What Will My Body Allow Me to Have?

“If you and your surgeon don't recognize and acknowledge what your body tissues will allow you to have now and for the future, one or both of you may pay a penalty you don't want to pay.”

One of the first and most important steps on the staircase is understanding the importance of reconciling desires with reality—reconciling your wishes with your tissues. what you want with what your body will allow you to have. It's much easier to find a surgeon who will tell you he can produce what you want than to find a surgeon who knows and will tell you how what you want is likely to affect you now and in the future. The choices you make now may decisively influence your risks of having problems and reoperations in the future.

It is critically important that you understand not only what you want but also how what you want is likely to affect you and your breasts in the future. Wishes are fine, but good wishes come true only when you and your surgeon reconcile your wishes with what your tissues will realistically allow you to have.

Why Define What You Want, and How Definitive Should You Be?

Let's start by assuming that you would like to have breasts that are beautiful or, at the least, better than they are now. But what is a “beautiful” breast? What is “better than they are now?” You probably have some feelings about the answers to these questions, but the feelings may be general and not well defined. That's okay for starters. In fact, that's probably a good start. Think first in generalizations, then focus and define your desires more clearly as you learn more. You don't like what you have now, but how do you make a surgeon understand what you want?

The more clearly you define your expectations and the better you communicate your specific desires to your surgeon, the more likely you will achieve your goals.

24 Hour Recovery

John B. Tebbetts, M.D. | Terrye Tebbetts

The Development of Processes and Techniques That Have Redefined the Patient and Surgeon Experience in Breast Augmentation

In 1993, Dr. Tebbetts recognized that the patient experience in breast augmentation had remained largely unchanged for over two decades, with patients requiring 10 days or more to return to normal activities following breast augmentation, and with an average of 18-20% of patients needing a reoperaiton within just 3 years following their augmentation according to United States FDA Premarket Approval Study data. When analyzing the reasons for lack of progress in the patient experience in breast augmentation, Dr. Tebbetts realized that almost every area connected with breast augmentation needed major rethinking and a major overhaul of the processes that determine patient results and recovery. Areas that needed improvement included patient education and informed consent, surgical planning and implant selection, surgical and anesthesia techniques, and patient management after surgery.
